American Fork Half Marathon Volunteer Day...
June 15, 2013...I was supposed to run the American Fork Half Marathon this year. I was so sad when I found out I couldn't because of my torn meniscus. It has been my favorite half marathon that I've run so far. Instead of running, we decided that we would volunteer at the race. We signed up, and Todd Hendricks (the guy in charge of the volunteers) knows me. When he found out we had volunteered, he put us on a special team of volunteers that came in at 3:45am and stayed until the race was over. We got a short sleeve shirt, and a long sleeve pull over shirt because it was going to be cold when we had to be there at 3:45am to direct traffic. We were so tired when we first got there. We directed traffic into parking stalls and then we went to our station just before mile 10. We had about an hour or longer before we would see the first runners come through. We just sat in the card and talked with the heater on. Then we got out of the car and sat in our double seated camping chair with our blanket. When we saw people coming, we got up and cheered them on. It was really fun! Because Intermountain Healthcare put this race on, I was able to see a lot of my friends and people I knew running. We also saw Melinda Carter running the race :)! We loved being there together and seeing so many people run the race. It was fun people watching and just seeing so many types of people run the race. When the race was over, we helped clean up and then we took off. We decided that we were going to do this again next year, or choose a different race to volunteer at. I love that we both enjoy volunteering and serving others.
